10 Questions With Varun Sayal| Author Interview|

Hey Booklovers! Happy Weekend. Continuing my Author Interview in this segment is Varun Sayal who wrote the popular Short Stories titled Time Crawlers. Check out his answers on 10 Questions!

AUTHOR PROFILE (1)

  1. When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

I had been writing blogs and satirical posts for a long time while few of my short stories languished in the deepest trenches of my computer’s hard drive. So that writer gene was always in there, though dormant. Time Crawlers was my first attempt at publishing a set of professionally edited fiction stories and the incredible response this book received reinforced my belief that writing is the path I needed to take.

  1. How long does it take you to write a book?

My start to end times are improving. Time Crawlers took ten months, Demons of Time took seven and my next book Time Travelers series book # 2 has taken three. I think two to three months is where I will stabilise for a decent size novel. Short stories take me a week or two at most, though if they need to pack a punch they may take times equivalent of a short novel.

  1. What is your schedule like when you’re writing?

It has to be in weekends and in mornings after I finish my breakfast and drink piping hot masala tea. I sit in a quiet room and start weaving those story threads. I do end up writing two to six thousand words at a stretch.

  1. What would you say is your unusual writing quirk?

My dialog is solid, stronger than my prose. When I write dialog in my stories it engages and is not a filler as opposed to the usual writing I have read from other authors.

  1. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

I read and view a lot of science related books and programming, around cosmos, blackholes, artificial intelligence, ancient historical findings. These give a lot of material for fiction while bringing a touch of authenticity to it. My background in science and mathematics helps too.

  1. Which is your favourite season to write in, and why?

I am an all seasons guy. As per me writing knows no season, it only requires bouts of inspiration.

  1. What is the most difficult part of your writing process?

Building a strong conflict is very critical to the impact a story can deliver. And knitting a good conflict can be challenging.

  1. What behind-the-scenes tidbit in your life would probably surprise your readers the most?

Although I write science fiction I am an avid comedy writer too, though my comic pieces are restricted to Facebook posts and small satirical pieces.

  1. How do you come up with names for your characters?

I draw names largely from mythology. I also keep the names such that their meaning is tied to the character’s intention or demeanour.

  1. How do you think being a writer has helped you as a person?

Writing as a hobby keeps me sane and helps me balance my professional pursuits along with my creative work.
