Kaffeinated Conversations

Hey BookLovers!

This is a weekly feature I have decided to start this year. It will include the books I read in the past week and my thoughts on current book trends and topics (including movies/series based on books) and the books I want to read. I also want to talk about what other book bloggers are sharing or their opinion on anything bookish. I just felt like as a book community it will be nice for everyone to gather around once in a while and share what they love so much – books!

One of the things I wish I was good at is listening to Audiobooks. I think it would save me a lot of time and help me multitask and keep up with my book tracking. Yet for the life of me I haven’t been able to complete even one Audiobook. Now I do think a slight ear pain while I listen on the headset that leads to a headache is a contributing factor, more often that not I end up falling asleep or at least half asleep which really frustrates me as I am neither listening nor sleeping!

Another thing is I really loose my attention and end up thinking about something else. I love getting lost in my thoughts and for better or worse Audiobooks help me do just that. These days my mom constantly complains am hardly listening to her and even though I did “hear” her it just passes by me. Like a ghost that glides through you and its pretty much the same with Audiobooks.

I would love to listen to Audiobooks and its something am really looking forward to, I tried my best with Ready Player One but I got too excited to keep pace and began reading. I almost made through a lot more on The Wife Between Us but as the story progressed I couldn’t wait to finish it asap. Sometimes I do try to simultaneously listen to the Audiobook and read the ebook where I do make slight progress but I have never reached the finish mark.

So how do you do it? Are you a fan of Audiobooks? What would you recommend to help listen to one patiently? Which is the book that hooked you? What would you recommend? I would love to hear from you. Please share in the comments!

Cheers XO

  1. Audiobooks are really good for simultaneous reading but I understand your problem, I faced some of them myself in the beginning, I still do, to be honest. especially the falling asleep and losing concentration part, therefore, I try to listen to an audiobook while doing chores, you know, cooking, cleaning or when I am traveling or is out for a walk. I think the key is not to sit idle while Listening. Also, I really think that maybe you should pick short audiobooks with an addictive plot so that you are on the edge of your seat and just can’t stop listening. That will help I think, I listened to a few thrillers early on like The Lying Game by Ruth Ware and some Lisa Jewel novels. You can try those.

My problem with audiobooks is that it takes me forever to finish them and I have lost interest in the story a lot of time because of that, therefore, I pick up an audiobook only when there isn’t an E-book available or whichever is cheap.

  2. I completely agree with Surbhi’s post. As someone who listens to more audiobooks than those I read, I’ve discovered that you cannot listen while doing something that can distract you, nor late at night in bed.

Regarding pacing, you should consider raising the audiobook speed. I’ve settled into 1.25 consistently and it depends on the narrator but have raised it to 1.5 for a few books. It fixed my “getting bored” issues when it had nothing to do with the story.

You may want to invest in wireless headphones instead of earbuds, which I can’t wear as they give me problems and hurt. Hubby bought me a fantastic set a couple of years ago and they solved the problem. However, they don’t need to be expensive. You should be able to find some for as little as $25.

Finally, I cannot emphasize enough how it’s best to listen when you’re doing something mindless like vacuuming, laundry, dusting or cleaning the bathroom. You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll look forward to housecleaning. Also, I just returned from a long road trip where I finished two books and don’t remember the trip being long.

    Hope this helps!

  3. I am a big fan of audiobooks, I never thought I would be either but the narratior is important too!. Apart from everything suggested here I recommend trying something with an accent: based in England, Ireland and maybe slightly humorous. I also agree with the point that I can’t listen to them sitting somewhere, it has to be accompanied by a task and at 1.5x 😁 travel is fun now!
