My Review
The Kooky Kids club is a plot revolving around Maxine. She is studying in her fifth grade but doesn’t have any friends. She considers herself different especially when she describes anything she does different which is usually embarrassing as ‘Maxine moments’.
One day she is mysteriously invited into a club named the Kooky Kids Club. There are three other members Lewis, Reggie and Lisa. They are all good at something like robotics, cooking and such. The club has a guideline book that Maxine is given to read. Over a period of time Maxine becomes more happy and confident with herself having finally found good natured friends.
But during the middle of her school her favourite teacher miss Thompson is found to have been fired for something she hasn’t done and Maxine with the help of her Kooky kids club friends decide to help miss Thompson out as discreetly as possible.
The story is really cute and perfect for kids so that they can learn it’s absolutely okay to be different. The character Maxine is really simple and fuss free. I found it odd there were no dialogues with her parents but it wasn’t that obvious.
I could connect with Maxine as she found everything she did odd and goofy which I feel all the time. Am always thinking in my head – ‘oh did I say the right thing? or oh is this how you do it? or oh I must sound so stupid to them’ – and it was so cool to have an author who wrote these characters with these things in mind and also have a club for them to interact. If only we had one in school *sigh*.
What I liked about the book is it’s fast paced, to the point, yet with amazing characters that kids would enjoy. It has that ‘children will love this’ vibe going for it. In fact I would love for my son and me to read this together (though not anytime soon..he is just one) The bonus part is you get to learn something along with it too.
Bibliogyan Verdict – An enjoyable read for kids as well as for adults serving a reminder!
Book Blurb:
Maxine is smart, quirky, and a bit of a misfit. One day, she receives a mysterious invitation to a meeting of the “Kooky Kids’ Club.”
Things are looking bright. It’s nice to finally have a real group of friends. Then Maxine’s teacher disappears.
Maxine doesn’t know what happened to her beloved teacher, or how she can help. But if anybody has the smarts to help Miss Thompson, it’s Maxine and the Kooky Kids’ Club…
This quirky chapter book is for the best kind of kids—the ones who are a little bit kooky!
